AI in Church Governance and Discernment
How should churches evaluate AI used in governance, budgeting, staffing, strategic planning, pastoral assignment, discipline processes, synods, councils, vestries, elder boards, or congregational discernment?
Why the question remains open
Church governance involves spiritual authority, stewardship, confidentiality, conflict, power, and discernment. Decision-support tools could improve administration but also centralize power, obscure accountability, or convert discernment into optimization.
Working hypothesis
A proposition to test, not a finding.
AI governance tools will be useful for summarization, scenario planning, and administrative analysis, but risky when they rank people, recommend pastoral actions, summarize sensitive conflicts, or frame spiritually significant decisions as data-optimization problems.
